Sandhill Crane Migration Update

Crane Staging Area in Platte Valley

Migration Map

Normally, the first cranes arrive in mid-February. Crane numbers peak in mid-to-late March. All Sandhill Cranes continue north to nesting areas by mid-April.

1996 Update

Early February

This year's first three cranes were spotted near Rowe Sanctuary on February 8th. Brisk northerly winds and cold temperatures in the following week slowed migration activity.

Mid February

Crane numbers are increasing each day, but are still low. Very warm temperatures during the week of 18th-24th, combined with generally southern winds have increased migration activity.

Late February

Cold weather continues to slow migration. There are approximately 30,000 cranes using the area around Rowe Sanctuary. An evening drive along the south side of the Platte from the Gibbon I-80 exchange to Highway 10 provides optimal viewing opportunities.

Early March

Record cold forces some cranes back south. Large numbers of ducks and geese in the Rainwater Basin Wetlands. Dry weather has concentrated waterfowl, sparking fears of avian cholera.

Mid March

Moderating temperatures and strong southerly breezes have brought thousands of cranes into the Big Bend Region. Viewers can see large concentrations of cranes between Kearney and Grand Island.

Mid April

The last of the Sandhills Cranes have migrated north.
